Medical Travel 101

Even though you may be coordinating a trip to include both vacation time and surgical procedures, it's a wise person who thinks ahead.

Here are a few suggestions:

1.  Do the vacation part of your trip first.

2.  Consider purchasing your ticket (at least the return leg) in first or business class accomodations. You'll have more room to move around in your seat, and more personal attention from the flight attendants if a problem arises.

3.  At the airport, ask for priority seating. Also ask for a ride to the gate if walking a distance is not comfortable for you.

4.  Let your flight attendant know that you are traveling for medical purposes.

5.  Get up and move around the cabin periodically during your flight.

6.  Dress for comfort, in layers so that you can adjust to cabin temperatures.

7.  Wear socks so that you can remove your shoes during flight without getting cold feet!

8.  Carry all prescription drugs in their original containers. Don't repack them in those cute little boxes until you're back home.

9.  Bring a gel pack with you (unless restricted by regulations) that can be heated or cooled.

10.  Stay hydrated. Drink water instead of alcohol or caffenated drinks.

11.  Ask for help with your luggage. Don't lift or pull around on heavy bags.

12.  Most important of all: follow your physician's orders!

13.  Factoid: Did you know that the original flight attendants were nurses?
