A 50-year old British gentleman – Mr John Petersen* - working at a multinational public company in Indonesia was hospitalized since 6 March 2006 after vomiting blood. His condition was critical as he was diagnosed to be bleeding in the oesophagus and required an immediate evacuation to Singapore for specialist medical treatment.
The call for help On the morning of 7 March, the patient’s colleague called International SOS’ alarm centre in Singapore for assistance as the patient’s condition was deteriorating rapidly.
The doctor on duty requested for the patient’s medical report and immediately activated Jakarta alarm centre.
Local expertise acted quickly International SOS’ Jakarta alarm centre sent a doctor to the hospital so that he could review the patient’s latest medical report and recommend an appropriate solution.
The Jakarta alarm centre doctor visited the patient and reviewed the medical report. At that time, the patient’s condition was critical and not stable enough to be evacuated to Singapore. The doctors continued to monitor the patient’s condition. In the meantime, the Singapore alarm centre was updating his company of the latest situation. The next day, the patient’s condition stabilized further and we decided to evacuate him on an air ambulance, escorted by a team of medical specialists. His company immediately authorized the evacuation.
Behind the scenes While the doctors were busy monitoring the patient’s condition, the aviation specialist had been notified so that he could proceed to identify a suitable air ambulance for the evacuation. He was also responsible for obtaining airport landing rights and the flight plan.
The Singapore alarm centre’s support team also developed a plan of action including identifying a receiving hospital in Singapore for treatment, arranging for a road ambulance to send the patient to the airport as well as immigration clearance.
A safe journey to Singapore On 9 March, the air ambulance took off from Singapore. By then, the Singapore alarm centre had also briefed the identified hospital – Raffles Hospital - in Singapore on the patient’s condition. The alarm centre also reserved hotel accommodation for the patient’s companion.
By evening, the air ambulance arrived in Singapore and the patient was transported smoothly to Raffles Hospital, one of the leading private hospitals in Singapore. The patient subsequently made a speedy recovery.
“I am very touched by the quick decision of my company to activate International SOS for evacuation as well as the medical escort team’s attentive care during the journey from Jakarta to Singapore. Raffles Hospital also proved to be a prestigious hospital in providing excellent medical treatment and care. I am glad to receive such world-class assistance in Singapore when I need it most!” remarked Mr Petersen.
